Scent marketing is the latest frontier in building memorable brands. It offers marketers a new and compelling way to engage with their target audience. It gets consumers to notice products by creating a more enjoyable experience adding the potential for greater creativity and cut-through.
Scent creates an immediate emotional response with the potential to increase sales and ROI.
Ink coverage, paper weight and paper finish will determine how your final scented piece looks. During your design phase consider the following suggestions to produce the best possible piece for your project.
Our process coats the entire surface of each paper with a water-based scent coating. It’s necessary to choose a paper that is sturdy enough to accept the coating without wrinkling and curling. We suggest the following:
A textured paper tends to “hide” the scent coating within the texture. The scent will be less noticeable to the eye and to the touch as compared with smooth paper. Additionally, uncoated paper will partially absorb the scent making it less noticeable to the eye and to the touch as compared with a matte finish.
We regularly work with all of the textures and finishes above, and have great results with all of them. Your paper choice will be based on how you want your final piece to look and feel.
We rarely use glossy finishes since the scent coating will give the paper a slightly matte appearance. Avoid aqueous coatings or high gloss coatings.
Our process allows us to apply a great deal of scent to each piece, and we apply the maximum amount that the paper and image will allow. Some scents are naturally stronger that others, and there is a point at which the scent cannot be made stronger. Consider the scents of coffee and marshmallow. Marshmallow is naturally light, and it won’t matter how many marshmallows you have – the scent won’t get any stronger! In contrast, the scent of coffee is very strong – even in small amounts and you can’t miss it!
The longevity of the scented paper will depend on how often the paper is handled, since that the scent is released by friction applied to the surface of the paper (fingers touching it, etc ). The scent will not evaporate and scented paper can therefore be stored until it is ready to use.
The scent coating should be applied after the paper has been printed, and should ideally be the last process for your paper. Some customers inkjet an address on the unscented side, and some send the papers through automatic folding and stuffing machines. You should test these processes if you plan to use them. Important: Scented papers are not for use in laser printers, copiers or heat transfer equipment.
We are happy to provide samples and testing to help you decide what is best for your project.
